Scale Project Final Piece : Stublick Chimney
- SCALE -
One of my first projects was initially inspired by a photo taken by John Davies. The image captured the Agecroft Power Stations colossal cooling towers juxtaposed by a group of people playing football in the foreground. I had seen this image when visiting a local photo gallery and instantly became fascinated by the idea of how a photo might depict scale, both large and small.
Some example work within the scale project: Lambley Viaduct and close up photos of grains of sugar
Photos taken in response to John Davies.
- SHADOWS -
Within this project I wanted to simply explore the idea of shadows. This led me to take inspiration from Ansel Adams, who's work within this area inspired my A-level final show.
Experimental work inspired by Michael Kenna. This style required blowing out the highlights and bringing down the shadows in order to create simplistic ethereal aesthetic.
The following photos were the five I selected and had displayed on a large scale in my school as part of my A level final show
Fine Art Workshop
During my foundation year in art and design I continued to explore and develop my photographic skills.
Some images taken during the fine art workshop, photos were later used as reference for ink paintings.

- JOURNEYS -
The project of Journeys was one in which I wanted to look at the idea of documenting a place through a collection of images rather than just one final image.
- PERSONAL WORK -
Concert Photography

In my home city of Newcastle I had the opportunity to shoot for a local band during a performance at the O2 Academy. I really enjoyed the faster pace of work in such a dynamic setting. The constant changes on stage with lighting, smoke and colour posed a creative challenge which was fascinating to edit.
A walk in the dark
I really enjoy taking my camera out at night, I find the process of night photography to be difficult but rewarding. When working in this area I often find myself being drawn back to the work of Todd Hido, a photographer I researched very early on in my education, and who's work I find very interesting and unique.
I find it particularly important, especially when editing my night photography, to remove any distractions which don't add value to the story I'm trying to portray. Due to this, after editing an image in Lightroom I will often take it over to Photoshop to remove excess lighting or objects that might draw the eye away form the focus.
Example of the editing process.
Colour grading work, inspired by Evan Ranft.
Some photographers I have found particularly inspiring recently are Henri Prestes and Briscoe Park. The eerie atmosphere and sense of unease they portray is something I have wanted to emulate within some of my own work whenever the conditions are right.
A selection of recent images inspired by Briscoe Park.
This was just a brief look at some the projects and pieces of work I have created so far in my photographic career.
